OLED MacBook Pro tipped for earlier arrival and it’s all thanks to Samsung

Apple is reportedly ahead of the previously expected schedule for launching the first-ever MacBook Pro with an OLED display, according to a new rumour.

A report this week claims Samsung Display is aiding the process by getting the production line for the all-important screen technology up and running and ready to roll this month.

According to the known-leaker yeux1122 (via MacRumors), the production of the panels will get underway this month, suggesting Apple is now happy with the product and it has passed all of the requisite tests for quality and reliability.

In a post (translated, which is why it sounds a bit dodgy) on the Naver blog the leaker says Samsung’s 8.6 generation OLED tech – a world first – is ready to roll on January 26. Previous expectations had been for production to begin in the second quarter (between March and June) so that’d represent around a 90-day movement in the right direction.

The leaker writes: “It is said that Samsung Display has started mass production of the 8.6 generation OLED for the first time in the world. Asan A6 8.6 generation OLED production line started mass production from January 26 (it was originally the second quarter of 26 as of last year) In this line, it will be the first delivery of Apple’s new MacBook Pro.”

The report also stacks up with previous reports claiming Apple will use the same tandem OLED display method first seen in the iPad Pro. Previous speculation has suggested the MacBook Pro OLED will be powered by an M6 processor, sport a new streamlined design and even include a touchscreen. The release may be in line for later this year, or perhaps earlier into 2027.
