Tens of thousands of users in the US reported problems with Amazon’s e-commerce website and app and other services on Thursday, in an incident that appeared to have subsided by the end of the day.

Beginning around 2 p.m. ET (7 p.m. GMT), a peak of more than 22,000 users reported problems with the e-commerce site to outage tracking Downdetector, subsiding to fewer than 1,700 by 6 p.m. ET.

Error screens

On social media, users reported checkout failures, price fluctuations, app crashes, and error pages showing when trying to access product details.

“We’re sorry that some customers may be experiencing issues while shopping,” Amazon said in a statement during the outage.

Users also reported minor disruptions to Amazon’s streaming service and Amazon Web Services.

In October 2025, a major AWS outage roiled online services around the world, disabling thousands of apps, payment systems and workplaces for hours.

Cloud disruption

Earlier this week, two AWS data centres in the United Arab Emirates and one in Bahrain were damaged by drone strikes from Iran.

AWS’ status page showed no new problems that might have been related to the e-commerce issue.

Amazon has been laying off tens of thousands of management and technical staff in recent months, as it spends hundreds of billions of dollars on AI infrastructure and services.
