The biggest upgrade is improved Active Noise Cancellation. Apple claims the new headphones can reduce noise up to 1.5 times more effectively than the previous generation. That means better isolation from common background sounds like airplane engines, traffic, or crowded offices. The transparency mode has also been tweaked with a new signal processing algorithm that is designed to make outside sounds feel more natural when users want to stay aware of their surroundings.
On the audio side, Apple says the headphones now feature a new high dynamic range amplifier, which should deliver cleaner sound without changing the overall tuning that the original AirPods Max were known for. Spatial Audio playback has also been improved with more precise instrument placement and more consistent bass response.
For users who prefer wired listening, the new model supports 24-bit, 48kHz lossless audio through the included USB-C cable. Apple is also positioning the headphones as a tool for creators, claiming ultra-low latency audio and support for personalised Spatial Audio with head tracking when used with music production software like Logic Pro. Reduced wireless latency should also help improve responsiveness for gaming.
Apple AirPods Max with H2 chip
Several software features powered by the H2 chip are arriving on AirPods Max for the first time. Adaptive Audio automatically balances noise cancellation and transparency based on the surrounding environment, while Conversation Awareness lowers the volume of whatever is playing when the user starts speaking to someone nearby.
The headphones also introduce a Live Translation feature powered by Apple Intelligence. Apple says this will help users communicate across languages during in-person conversations, although availability will vary depending on language and region.
Other additions include Voice Isolation for clearer calls, a camera remote function that lets users trigger photos or video recording from the headphones, and studio-quality audio recording aimed at podcasters and content creators. Apple has also added loud sound reduction to help limit exposure to harmful environmental noise, along with personalised volume adjustments that adapt to listening habits over time.
In terms of design, the headphones continue to use the familiar metal earcups and mesh headband of the original model. They will be available in five colours: midnight, starlight, orange, purple, and blue.
The AirPods Max 2 are priced at ₹67,900 in India and will be available to order starting March 25, with availability expected early next month.
While the update brings several useful software features and improvements to noise cancellation, the overall package remains similar to the first AirPods Max. For many users, the decision to upgrade will likely depend on whether those incremental improvements justify the still-premium price.
