Amazon is looking to ramp up the number of robots in its facilities, a move that could replace over 600,000 jobs by 2030, per a report by The New York Times, citing leaked internal documents. The company has also claimed, in the document, that it will sell twice as many of goods within that time period.
The internal documents showed that Amazon’s robotics team was working towards automating 75% of the company operations that would avoid 160,000 U.S. employees who would have been hired by 2027. This would result in around $12.6 billion in savings between 2025 and 2027.
The document also revealed that the company has plans to pre-empt any backlash as a result of the ramp up. In it, Amazon plans to use terms like “advanced technology” or “cobot,” instead of more direct words like “AI” and “automation.”
An Amazon spokesperson said that the documents showed an “incomplete picture” and denied that they were avoiding using certain terms when referring to robotics.
