Apple may replace iPhone Plus and Pro Max with Ultra and Air. What we know so far

2025 is expected to mark a major shift in Apple’s iPhone naming strategy. Last month, Apple introduced the iPhone 16e as its most affordable model, replacing the long-standing iPhone SE. The SE line-up had catered to budget-conscious users seeking an iPhone experience at a lower price. However, reports suggest Apple isn’t stopping there—an even bigger rebranding is on the horizon with the iPhone 17 series.

Apple is reportedly set to revamp its iPhone lineup this year by replacing the iPhone Plus and iPhone Pro Max with the new iPhone 17 Air and iPhone 17 Ultra. The iPhone 17 Air is expected to be the slimmest iPhone yet, while the iPhone 17 Ultra will take the spot as Apple’s most premium flagship.

According to a leak on the Korean platform Naver by regular leaker yeux1122, the iPhone 17 Ultra will succeed the Pro Max as the top-tier model. This shift aligns with Apple’s strategy of using the “Ultra” branding for its high-end devices, similar to the Apple Watch Ultra. The Ultra variant is also expected to feature exclusive high-end upgrades, distinguishing it from the rest of the lineup.

The iPhone 17 Ultra is rumored to feature a smaller Dynamic Island, a vapor chamber cooling system for improved thermal efficiency, and a larger battery, solidifying its status as Apple’s top-tier flagship.
On the other hand, the iPhone 17 Air is expected to replace the Plus variant with a much slimmer design—reportedly 30% thinner than the iPhone 16. With declining sales of the iPhone Plus, Apple is reportedly phasing it out in favor of the Air, which will sport a slightly smaller 6.6-inch display instead of the Plus’s 6.7-inch screen, offering a more compact yet powerful alternative.

In addition to the Ultra and Air, the iPhone 17 lineup will include the standard iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro, ensuring a range of options for different consumer segments. While these leaks have sparked excitement, they remain unverified, and only Apple’s fall 2025 launch will confirm what’s in store.
