Apple may unveil Gemini-powered Siri upgrade as early as February: Report

Apple is reportedly preparing to showcase a major overhaul of its Siri voice assistant as early as the second half of February, according to a new report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. The update would mark the first public step in Apple’s long-promised effort to significantly upgrade Siri’s capabilities and bring it closer in line with modern AI-powered assistants.

At the centre of the revamp is Google’s Gemini AI. The upcoming version of Siri is expected to be powered by Gemini models under the hood, following a multiyear partnership between Apple and Google that was announced earlier this month. If revealed as expected, this would represent Apple’s most significant change to Siri since its introduction.

The upgraded assistant is believed to arrive as part of iOS 26.4, which is expected to enter beta testing around February, with a wider rollout likely in March or April. Rather than announcing it at a large keynote, Apple may opt for private briefings or a smaller, focused event to demonstrate the new Siri experience, according to the report.

In terms of functionality, the Gemini-backed Siri is expected to be far more capable than the current version. It is said to have improved awareness of on-screen content, better use of personal context to complete tasks, and more natural, conversational responses. These features were first outlined at WWDC 2024 but were delayed after Apple reportedly ran into technical challenges during development.

Apple’s decision to rely on Google’s AI technology marks a notable shift in strategy. The company has traditionally leaned on its own in-house solutions, with limited external partnerships. Turning to Gemini highlights both the rapid pace of the generative AI race and the pressure on Apple to address Siri’s long-standing shortcomings compared to rivals.

Looking further ahead, Gurman reports that Apple is planning an even more ambitious transformation of Siri in 2026. This next phase could be unveiled at WWDC in June and may introduce a deeply conversational assistant experience across iPhone, iPad, and Mac as part of iOS 27.

As with all pre-release information, Apple has not confirmed any timelines or features. However, consistent reporting from Gurman and others has raised expectations that a meaningful Siri upgrade may finally be close. Apple did not respond to a request for comment.
