Bye bye alert slider: OnePlus to replace the iconic switch with new customisable button

OnePlus has long been known for its signature Alert Slider, a small yet beloved feature that allows users to switch between sound profiles effortlessly. However, the company is now set to retire it in favor of a customizable Action Button, offering more functionality beyond just silent mode. This shift was confirmed by OnePlus CEO Pete Lau in a recent community post, sparking a debate among loyal fans who have grown attached to the simplicity and convenience of the Alert Slider.

Lau has suggested that future OnePlus phones will no longer feature the Alert Slider, as the company plans to introduce a smarter, more customizable button for enhanced functionality. While he describes this as an “evolution” rather than a replacement, the Alert Slider’s return seems unlikely. If that holds true, the OnePlus 13 could be the last device to include this fan-favorite feature.

His community post read –
“The new smart button is designed for that future, delivering a more personalized experience. Imagine a button that adapts to you. Whether you are a power user or prefer simplicity, this button works for you, not the other way around. Wherever life takes you, it seamlessly fits your lifestyle. It’s an innovation that is not just smart but intuitively yours. This change allows us to better utilise the device’s space, explore new layouts, and make structural improvements while keeping performance top-notch,”

Lau also reassured users that the silent mode feature is here to stay, similar to what Apple has done with its Action Button. On iPhones, the Action Button can still function as a mute switch, but it also offers customization options for various tasks. These include launching the camera, toggling the flashlight, managing notifications, adjusting ringer settings, opening the magnifier app, and more—suggesting that OnePlus users may soon get similar flexibility.

“I know how essential it is to be able to silence your phone quickly and easily, and that feature is staying intact with the new button,” Lau said.

Currently, we aren’t aware on what device we will see this new button. However, there have been rumors that a compact OnePlus 13 will be planned. Maybe this device can be a good testing ground for this button.
