As the European Union prepares for a change in leadership at the Council, renewed attention is falling on the bloc’s telecommunications sector, with industry executives renewing calls for market consolidation.

Proponents argue that a smaller number of larger mobile operators would be better positioned to invest in infrastructure, enhance network performance, and strengthen Europe’s digital resilience and competitiveness.

Yet the consolidation drive faces pushback from regulators, who caution that reduced competition could lead to higher consumer prices and diminished service quality.
