The development follows years of slippage from the original 2020 target, as Tesla shifted focus toward scaling production and advancing its artificial intelligence (AI) and energy businesses.
The teaser coincides with the anniversary of the Tesla Roadster, which entered production in 2008 on March 17, marking the company’s entry into the automotive market.
Musk did not share images or technical specifications, leaving key details undisclosed.
Reacting to the post, Uber founder Travis Kalanick suggested that industry insiders view the upcoming reveal by Tesla as something approaching “sorcery and magic,” implying a breakthrough product by the EV-maker.
Tesla Roadster launch: What to expect?
In May last year, Musk claimed that the upcoming Tesla Roadster will be able to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph (0-100 kmph) in under one second, which is faster than the current record holder, the $2.2 million Rimac Nevera, which achieved the feat in 1.74 seconds.
Rimac Nevera is an all-electric sports car designed and manufactured by the Croatian automotive manufacturer Rimac Automobili.
In terms of pricing, the Tesla Roadster is expected to be significantly cheaper than the Rimac Nevera, with an estimated price range of $200,000 to $250,000. This is in stark contrast to the $2.2 million price tag of the Rimac Nevera.

Tesla sales dip
The announcement comes a month after Tesla lost its crown as the world’s bestselling EV maker to China’s BYD.
Tesla said that it delivered 1.64 million vehicles in 2025, down 9% from a year earlier. Chinese rival BYD, which sold 2.26 million vehicles last year, is now the biggest EV maker.
The Texas-headquartered company faces sales pressure in the world’s three biggest car markets: Europe, China and the United States. Its sales fell 48.5% across Europe in October versus the same month in 2024.
