Google in 2025 will focus on its Gemini AI offering and the business side of its technology, according to internal discussions this month.

During a company meeting on December 18, Google CEO Sundar Pichai stressed on building the company’s business and scaling its AI technology Gemini for consumers, as the internet giant tries to surpass Microsoft-backed OpenAI, reported CNBC.

Pichai acknowledged that the company was facing “scrutiny” worldwide from regulators, but said this indicated the huge scale and significance of Google. He urged employees not to be distracted.

“I think 2025 will be critical,” Pichai was quoted as saying by CNBC.

Meanwhile, Google DeepMind’s Demis Hassabis said the company would focus on the Gemini app, and promised quick evolution of the technology from next year. This was in response to concerns that Google was not necessarily keeping pace with OpenAI. Hassabis also discussed how Gemini might be monetised in the future.

Pichai, for his part, emphasised on the need to be “scrappy,” and said that headcount did not always solve problems. He expressed his belief that constraints could also lead to creativity, per CNBC.

Google’s Gemini recently turned one.

“We celebrated the one-year anniversary of our Gemini era by introducing our next, agentic era in AI — brought to life by our newest, most capable model, Gemini 2.0. We also shared landmark quantum chip news, and a whole raft of new generative AI offerings in Android, Pixel, Gemini, and our developer platforms AI Studio and Vertex AI. It’s certainly been a December to remember,” said Google in a blog post summing up its AI achievements this year.
