Government launches Entity Locker for secure document management

The government has developed Entity Locker, a new cloud-based solution that offers storing, sharing, and verifying documents and can be used by large organisations, corporations, micro, small, and medium Enterprises (MSMEs), trusts, startups, and societies.

The new platform has been launched within days of the government releasing a draft of the rules of the Digital Public Data Protection which mandates the guardians’ consent for children accessing and using social media.

In the rules, the government has proposed that internet and social media intermediaries use any government-issued identity card or a digital locker to verify the age of children and their relationship with the user claiming to be their legal guardian.

Developed by the National E-governance Division of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, the Entity Locker will offer real-time access and verification of documents through integration with government databases, and consent-based mechanisms for secure sharing of sensitive information.

It will also ensure Aadhaar-authenticated role-based access management to ensure accountability, legally valid digital signatures to verify the documents stored in the locker and 10 gigabytes (GB) of free storage.

“Entity Locker’s seamless integration with systems such as the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, the Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN), the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) and other regulatory institutions provides businesses instant access to critical documents. This connectivity facilitates simplified compliance processes and ensures efficient document management,” the IT ministry said.
