Digital Passport Functionality
According to Apple’s official newsroom, this new feature will allow users to present a digital version of their passport at select TSA checkpoints. Travelers will unlock their digital passport using the iPhone’s biometric authentication system, such as Face ID or Touch ID. This ensures that only the rightful owner can access and present the credential, adding an extra layer of security. Apple stresses that while the digital passport simplifies domestic airport procedures, it does not replace physical passports for international travel.
The TSA’s Digital ID program already supports identity verification through digital credentials at over 250 airports across the U.S. Apple’s digital passport builds on this framework, providing travelers with another secure and convenient way to present identification.
