ROME – A delegation of MEPs from the European Parliament’s Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs Committee (LIBE) will be in Rome on Friday 30 May to investigate the developments of Paragon spyware scandal.
The case has sparked national outrage: the Israeli-made surveillance tool Graphite, developed by Paragon, was reportedly used to monitor investigative journalists and NGO activists – an alleged breach of contract that led to the termination of Italy’s agreement with the company.
Despite repeated calls for transparency, the Italian government has refused to disclose further details publicly, stating that clarifications would only be provided before COPASIR – the parliamentary committee overseeing intelligence services, which is currently assessing the claims.
The LIBE mission, led by S&D MEP Sandro Ruotolo, will meet with the victims of the spyware, representatives of the Italian press, and members of COPASIR.
