Apple has hired Meta’s chief legal officer Jennifer Newstead as its general counsel and senior vice president, in the iPhone maker’s latest major executive shake-up.
Newstead, previously the legal adviser of the US Department of State, is to assume her role as Apple senior vice president in January and will become Apple’s general counsel in March.
Legal role
Apple’s current general counsel, Kate Adams, has been with the company since 2017 and is to retire in late 2026 following a transition of duties, the company said.
Meanwhile Lisa Jackson, currently Apple’s vice president for environment, policy and social initiatives, is to retire in late January.
Following Adams’ retirement, Apple’s government affairs organisation, currently part of environment, policy and social initiatives, will become part of the general counsel’s department led by Newstead.
Executive shifts
Newstead had been with Meta for seven years.
Amid other executive shifts this year, Apple’s chief of human interface design Alan Dye was recently appointed chief design officer at Facebook parent Meta, where he is to focus on hardware devices such as Meta’s AI-powered smart glasses.
