In a cryptic update on X on Tuesday, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman teased a major announcement, writing, “launching something really fun today!”

The post accompanied an AI-generated image of himself, which was captioned, “most likely to launch an image model”.

This comes days after OpenAI unveiled its latest model, GPT-5.2. The timing is critical for a new model as the AI company has been under pressure from Google’s Gemini 3 and Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4.5.

Earlier this month, Altman reportedly declared an internal “code red” to accelerate improvements to ChatGPT to retain its competitive edge. In an internal memo, Altman accepted that Google’s recent successes in AI could “create some temporary economic headwinds for our company”. Altman assured colleagues that OpenAI is “catching up fast”, and would emerge on top in the AI race.

The feature is likely to be a consumer-focused image or video editing tool, designed to showcase OpenAI’s multimodal abilities when Google is gaining ground with its Nano Banana updates.
