OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT Gov, a specialized version of ChatGPT designed to offer U.S. government agencies a new way to access OpenAI’s advanced models. In a recent blog post, the company explained that by providing ChatGPT to the government, it seeks to ensure that AI is used in a way that serves the national interest and the public good, aligned with democratic values. The goal is to empower policymakers to responsibly integrate these technologies and improve services for the American people.OpenAI stated that U.S. government agencies can deploy ChatGPT Gov within their own Microsoft Azure commercial cloud environments, giving them access to many of the features and capabilities offered by ChatGPT Enterprise, such as custom GPTs. The company emphasized that ChatGPT Gov allows agencies to maintain control over security, privacy, and compliance, meeting strict cybersecurity standards like IL5, CJIS, ITAR, and FedRAMP High. This configuration is also designed to expedite internal approvals for using OpenAI’s tools with sensitive, non-public data.

Feels like ChatGPT Enterprise

In the blog post, OpenAI outlined several features of ChatGPT Gov, noting that while many overlap with those of ChatGPT Enterprise, they come with enhanced security. According to the company, government officials can securely save and share conversations within a protected workspace, as well as upload text and image files. Powered by the flagship GPT-4 model, the platform also allows employees to create and share custom GPTs within their secure environment.

This launch comes on the heels of widespread adoption of OpenAI’s AI technology across various levels of government. According to the company, over 90,000 government employees have used ChatGPT, generating more than 18 million prompts for tasks such as document translation, drafting policy memos, code development, and application creation.

Additionally, OpenAI is working toward achieving FedRAMP accreditation for ChatGPT Enterprise—the foundation for ChatGPT Gov—to ensure it meets the stringent security standards required for government use.
