Sony planning pricey and premium 1000X The ColleXion headphones – report

Sony is planning to launch a pair of premium over-ear headphones under the banner “1000X The ColleXion” according to a new leak.

The headphones could be limited edition and sit above the current flagship WH-1000XM6 and cost more too. According to the purported leak from Dealabs, Sony will sell the headphones for €629 (around $728 / £549). The current WH-1000XM6 cost €450/$460/£400. It’s also more than Apple’s new AirPods Max 2, which cost €579/$549/£499. The report also says they’ll only be available in black.

The site says: “At this pricing level, we are clearly moving away from the idea of a simple successor to the WH-1000XM6, which was launched at 449 euros. Everything suggests that it is a limited edition model, or even a product designed as a collector’s item, which its name suggests.”

Dealabs says Sony is planning to launch the 1000X The ColleXion headphones on May 16, which is a little over five weeks away. There’s nothing in the report about what’ll make these headphones special, and worth the extra expenditure, but we might be looking at more premium materials.

Furthermore, the report also says Sony is planning on releasing a new colour option for the WH-1000XM6, which was released in May last year. The fifth colourway will be called Sandstone and have a “sandy beige hue” according to the report.

The company’s latest flagship headphones boosted the noise-cancelling prowess and included a welcome redesign that re-added foldable hinges. They offer exceptional sound quality across the spectrum of music genres and intuitive touch controls.

Last May, our reviewer wrote: “If you have perfectly functional XM5 headphones, the upgrade might be harder to justify unless you’ve been desperately missing the folding design. But for everyone else seeking the very best wireless headphones available today, the WH-1000XM6 are likely the new gold standard. For now, at least.”
