Public data is essential for solving major challenges, and for Africa, it’s the fuel for an AI-driven future. To help realize this potential, Google is committing $2.25 million to help modernize the continent’s public data systems, making them accessible and ready for the AI age.
This funding will leverage Data Commons, our open-knowledge repository that organizes public data into a single, reliable resource. In collaboration with the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), we’ll help launch a regional Data Commons for Africa. We’re also supporting PARIS21 (The Partnership in Statistics for Development in the 21st Century) to provide AI training and technical support to National Statistical Offices. Together, these efforts will help turn fragmented data into actionable insights for policymakers, supporting everything from food security to economic development.
