Unified Payments Interface (UPI) services have been affected with multiple reports of failure of transactions from across the country.

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which manages the UPI operations, acknowledged the outage and said that it was working to resolve the issue, hours after several users flagged the issue.

“NPCI is currently facing intermittent technical issues, leading to partial UPI transaction declines. We are working to resolve the issue, and will keep you updated. We regret the inconvenience caused,” the NPCI said in a post on X.

Saturday’s (April 12, 2025) outage happens to be the second such occurrence this month. On April 2, users of the UPI payments server of some banks had also experienced some latency for a brief period of time. This was a day after April 1 when banks experience some procedural issues owing to closing of the financial year. Services were however restored in both instances.

Outage monitoring website Downdetector showed that users first started experiencing issues with the payments interface at about 11:50 a.m. on Saturday (April 12, 2025). The number of complaints peaked around 1 p.m. with more than 2,300 people having reported their experience. According to the website, 81% of the users complained about issues relating to payments, 17% fund transfers and 2% purchases.

Several users faced difficulty in paying even small amounts as the UPI transactions failed. Some users reported that they received the error message “Recipient’s bank network is down. You’re not able to make payment to your recipient’s bank. Please try paying to a different bank account.”
