Artificial intelligence tools can fabricate entirely new images and videos. But they can now also make much smaller tweaks by inserting A.I. elements into genuine photographs, further blurring the line between what’s real and what’s fake.

In this quiz, we’ve taken photographs shot by New York Times reporters and edited them with these A.I. tools. Your job: Point to the part of the photograph that is A.I.-generated.

Was it easier or harder than you imagined? The technology is still far from perfect — some of
the people it created had more than five fingers, for example. But the images were incredibly
easy to create, requiring almost no expertise. As the technology improves and more tools are
released, expect to see more images that were subtly altered by A.I.
